Storage Tips

Store loosely in lunch-sized paper bags with holes punched in them for air circulation in a cool, dark pantry.  Potatoes and onions should not be stored together. They give off gases that will accelerate spoilage of each other.  Don't ever store onions in plastic bags. That will accelerate sprouting and spoilage because of the lack of air circulation. Onions should not be stored for an extended time in the refrigerator because the cold temperature will soften their texture.

Nutritional Information

Shallots are a good source of Vitamin C, Folate and Potassium, and a very good source of Vitamin A, Vitamin B6 and Manganese.

Fun facts

  • Shallots are a quintessential ingredient in Bearnaise sauce and classic French vinaigrettes. Shallots pair well with butter, cream, citrus and vinegar.
  • According to some medical studies, shallot has potential to prevent development of several types of cancer (lungs, stomach, breast and colorectal).
